Questions about this service
What does redundancy support for employers include?
It includes a redundancy risk assessment with ways to reduce that risk, guidance on running the process cost-effectively, consultation support delivered remotely or on site, flexible options for ongoing advice, and help from the first decision to completion, with a clear documentation trail that protects the business.
When does collective redundancy consultation apply?
Today, collective consultation applies when 20 or more redundancies are proposed at one establishment within 90 days. The Employment Rights Act 2025 adds a new threshold counted across the whole business, expected in 2027 with the figure set in regulations. Since 6 April 2026, the maximum protective award for failing to consult is 180 days' pay.
What are the new redundancy laws in the UK?
The main change is to unfair dismissal. For an effective date of termination on or after 1 January 2027, employees need six months' service to claim instead of two years, and the compensatory award cap is removed. Statutory redundancy pay still needs two years' service, and its weekly pay cap stays.
Can redundancy be unfair dismissal?
Yes. Redundancy is a potentially fair reason for dismissal, not an automatically fair one. If the selection, the consultation or the paperwork is wrong, the dismissal can still be found unfair. Consult properly, explain how decisions were reached and keep a clear documentation trail from the first decision to completion, because mistakes are hard to undo once notice is given.
Why use an HR specialist for redundancy?
Because redundancy is one of the riskiest processes an employer runs, and mistakes are hard to undo once notice is given. A specialist checks the selection, the consultation and the paperwork before each step. Book a free 30-minute discovery call before you announce anything to staff.
